neurologista pediatra do Hospital S. Francisco Xavier, reconhecido no evento
A primeira
hospitalar.
A intenção
No
A criação

The success of the Tuberous Sclerosis (TS)
Meeting
The fisrt meeting of TS sufferers and their families occured on the 25th and 26th last September, as well as, the first Medical Congress about the disease in Portugal. Both events took place in Lisbon resulting in important achievements for the Portuguese that suffer from this condition.
This was the first event
organized by the newly created Associação de Esclerose Tuberosa em Portugal
(AETN). The AETN was founded by the mothers of some of the affected people. So
far, it has been able to raise awereness, not only for the need for more and
more accurate information about this condition, but also for the introduction
of specialized treatment in our country. This event allowed the 24
participating families to openly express themselves about their concerns and
doubts regarding this rare pathology. After the presentations given by the
invited speakers, the families were able to get specific counseling from the
foreign experts.
Most of the invited speakers are doctors at the Cincinnati Children’s
Hospital, in the U.S.A., such as the pediatric neurologist, Dr. Krueger, the
nefrologist, Dr. Bissler and nurse Elizabeth Coombs, all having a considerable
experience regarding the treatment and evolution of this condition. Dr. José
Carlos Ferreira, pediatric neurologist at São Francisco Xavier Hospital, is
recognized as the TS expert in our country. He was the responsible for the
counseling sessions. Besides these doctors, about twenty other Portuguese
doctors, namely neurologists, nefrologists, dermatologists, geneticists and
psychologists, participated with high interest on the second day and were
present for the Congress.
According to the AETN, the
number of participants was quite satisfactory. This fact allowed the
Association to make important decisions, which represent the first steps
towards the specific goals established by
the AETN. The first significant achievement was the permission to use Rapamycin
(Sirolimus), in all patients with subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA), within hospital environment. This means it is the first
treatment/medicine used in Portugal to fight TS. These patients utterly need
the treatment, since they suffer from a brain tumor which is constantly
growing, knwon as the subependymal giant cell astrocytoma. So far, the only alternative was a
removal surgery, which several times caused irreversible damages. For now, these will be the
only patients who will take this medicine according to their doctor’s decision.
The purpose of the AETN is to bring another medicine,
Everolimus, to Portugal, hoping to obtain better results. This is due to happen
in a near future, but it depends on the permission given by the responsible
agencies.
During the Congress, the AETN had a positive feedback regarding the
participation of some doctors as part of a medical assistance group intended to
be created in the future. This medical assistance group will provide regular
and specialized support for the patients through medical appointments and blood
tests available to all, as well as, customized treatments. Furthermore, it is
expected a wider and better training for Portuguese doctors.
It is a fact that, since the event new families, whose have been affected
by this condition, have reached the AETN hoping to get some kind of emotional
support.
The event was covered by some Media as a way to promote it, being Oni a
significant supporter and sponsor. Other companies, such as Novartis and
Pfizer, along with representatives from the Ministry of Education and the
Faculty of Medicine were also present.
It is our deepest wish that the AETN could, in the future, improve the
lives of all the Portuguese TS patients. We would like to thank those who took
part in this event, hoping that it has been the first of many to come.

Dear parents:
Hoping that my life story will contribute to bring some comfort and light in your hearts, I am here to tell it and I allow it to be published.
50 years ago I went through all nightmares, anguish and afflictions that all parents are living and all I ask from you strength and courage, because only God knows our future and, luckily, there have been and will continue to exist studies and advances in the research of this disease.
I heard the most terrible prognoses; all were doubts, inaccuracies and pessimism. The Pringle or Bourneville disease, as it was known back then, was unknown to many doctors and I resorted to all, hoping someone would tell me what I wanted to hear. All the tests made lead to the disease. He was what we now call a hyperactive child.
He was followed by the best doctors, but I will never forget Professor Orlando Leitão, who always encouraged me and to whom I will be eternally grateful.
We waited with great anxiety the first day of school. Doctors always questioned his success but, thanks God, he made a normal academic life and even got a degree. Of course he has some symptoms of the disease, but leads a normal life, he is autonomous, independent and has his own family.
For all this, it would be selfish of me not to share and ask all the families a lot of faith, strength and hope, because there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
Hoping to have brought some light to some hearts, I can only say: it was worth it.
I haven’t been in contact with Mothers Zélia and Micaela for a long time, but I can only say “thank you very much” for all their commitment, dynamism and willingness to help everyone.
